Why is Prayer so hard?

Urgh! I used to hate praying a lot. It felt like so much work because of the template we grew up with. That sweet sleep between 5 and 6 a.m especially if I slept late then my mum wakes me up abruptly “Alicia!!!! Wake up, it’s time for morning devotion” It became a chore I dreaded. Sometimes, at the sound of her voice I’d quickly kneel beside my bed, lifting up holy hands to make it seem like I’ve praying before she opens my door.

Fast forward to my teenage years, I arrived at the conclusion that prayer was for a select few: Prophets, Pastors, Ministers, Evangelists, and the rest. Our own was to enjoy the benefits of their prayer. A few Psalm 23 and the Lord’s Prayer would do. What a skewed perspective!

The worse part? I hated being around prayer warriors. They made me feel inferior. Ahn! ahn!! How can they be praying for hours? Don’t they get tired?

I grew up hearing that Prayer is communication with God but it never meant anything to me until recently. It’s good to go to church, great that you listen to gospel songs, important to read your bible but how often do you pray?

Not the prayer you mumble when you wake up or the one you do when you’re desperately in need of something (Kai, the way we treat God like maga ehn). The one you consciously set aside time to meet with God everyday.

“When you read the Bible, you know more about God but it’s in the place of prayer that you meet with God”

– Prophet Maseke Daniels

A man I love and respect so much, Sir Victor Friend Sani fondly called “Pa” by all his children taught me the best way to pray:

“Don’t say too many words you don’t mean because you want to feel like you’ve prayed. Mean every word you say when you pray even if it’s two words and you’ll grow with time. Be consistent and intentional. That’s how I started”

I was a champion at setting appointments with God and never showing up but I got mad when people stood me up. How selfish!!. Honor your appointments with God. You don’t stand your parents up.

You have absolutely no idea how much He craves a relationship with you where you can talk to him about everything including the private sin you’re struggling with.

He’s eager to show you and teach you things if you seek Him. He won’t force himself on you. The best part is once you start to pray genuinely from your heart you’d see him move. Things will change about you from within and outside.

“Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.”

Jeremiah 33:3 KJV

“But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.”

1 Corinthians 2:9 KJV

Truth: I feel like 3 days ago was the first genuine prayer I have prayed in my life. I felt it from my heart and no! It wasn’t long but I’m getting there.

Don’t be like the pentium 2 version of me that “Having a relationship with God” was a yearly goal for me ( For atleast 7 years) that I never kept up with. This version of me is intentional seeking Him for an undying relationship. I’m not even half way there or quarter, but I’m not where I used to be.
